After recognizing the need for greater emergency care on campus at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), current student Alexandra Montgomery worked with the campus medical department and police to initiate development of an EMS “club.” While the organization awaits final administrative approval to be an operational EMS service, they have already had a high impact on CPR/AED education in the campus community. The IIT organization hosts CPR/AED certification courses that are open to school staff, students, and visitors. In addition, the organization has organized EMT courses to ensure that there is an available cadre of on-campus EMTs. These educational initiatives have allowed the developing squad to engage with their community and promote EMS education prior to their official launch as an EMS agency.
