Since their formation in 1983, Johns Hopkins Emergency Response Organization (HERO) has worked tirelessly to improve the training and resources available to the Johns Hopkins Community. Notable milestones include becoming a 24/7 service in 1995, committing to EMT-B Certification for all members in 2013, and affiliating with Lifeline’s Critical Care Transport Team in 2015. The affiliation with Lifeline provided HERO a pivotal opportunity by offering the chance to rent an ambulance for $1 per year, with the understanding that HERO would purchase their own ambulance in the future. HERO has since been determined to obtain their own ambulance in order to provide inter-facility transport between the Johns Hopkins University campus and local hospitals. Under the leadership of Christopher Wend (former Captain) and Leela Herbst (current Captain), HERO members successfully completed emergency vehicle operation courses (EVOCs) and are in the process of obtaining administrative approval for inter-facility transport. This accomplishment would make HERO the first collegiate EMS agency in Maryland to provide ambulance transport.
